Making a Home Fire Escape Plan | SERVPRO® of South Nashville

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Research shows that often times most injuries from household fires are very preventable; but we do not have the proper plans in place.

Throughout childhood, we all practiced fire drills. While it may have only served as a way to get out of class- it could have been one of the most important things we learned in our formative years. Last year alone 3,645 people died due to a fire, the majority of which were preventable.

According to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and NFPA, the best way to stay safe during a fire is to have a home fire escape plan; similar to the one that we all practiced in school.

Depending upon who you ask, there are several keys to remember in creating such a plan; however, we have compiled the list of the must haves.

  1. Sketch a map of you home.
  2. Identify two ways out of every room.
  3. Ensure all smoke alarms are properly working.
  4. Establish an outside meeting place for you and your children.
  5. Learn the number to the local fire department.
  6. PRACTICE the plan.

By remembering these seven steps, you could prevent disaster within your home!
