How to plan a fire escape

2/14/2022 (Permalink)

In home fire emergencies, every second counts, making it vital that families are prepared. It only takes minutes for a house to fill with smoke and become completely engulfed in flames. Learn how to plan a fire escape so that you and yours can safely make the call for a Nashville Fire Restoration specialist to help you get your home back to normal.

Get the Right Equipment

Taking the time to create a home fire escape plan could literally save your lives. Another thing that has been proven to save lives in the case of a home fire are smoke detectors. The sooner you are aware of a fire, the more likely it is that your family can safely escape which is why having multiple smoke detectors on every level of your home, including in hallways and your kitchen is your best bet.

Another piece of equipment that is a must is at least one escape ladder. These aren’t the type of ladders that you use to hang your holiday lights or clean your gutters. Escape ladders attach quickly to most common windows and are flame retardant, durable and sturdy. Once the escape ladder is deployed over the window of a 2nd floor room, the person can escape relatively easily.

Identify Exits and Meeting Spots

Every adult and child in your home should be involved in creating your home escape plan. Walk through your house and make sure you can all identify at least 2 different routes out of the rooms in your home. When selecting your meeting spot, choose a spot far enough away from your house that it will be a safe distance from any fire, but close enough that your kids would be comfortable walking there by themselves if needed (like a neighbor's house, a stop sign, etc.).

Practice Makes Perfect

Practice, practice, practice. Try to run through your plan at least twice a year so that it’s still fresh in your memory. If you have small children in your home, make your fire plan practice fun by making a game out of it so that they’ll enjoy the experience of practice and help them absorb the important lessons of fire escape plan.
